I purchased this for my iPad Kindle app and was impressed with the book. Working in education, cloud-based computing is front-and-center as many schools have moved to chromebooks and use Google Docs, save to Google Drive, or use Macs / PCs and may save to other cloud services like iCloud or MS OneDrive. I find the concept so interesting from an academic sense, but this book really delves into the real-world side of cloud computing that takes the reader's concept of the cloud to the next level. The discussion around the human element in regards to the cloud was something I had not considered in terms of moving an organization or business in that direction. I had never thought about how implementing a cloud-based system organizationally really does require thought and planning and is more complicated than simply flipping a switch and telling everyone at work to "save to the cloud instead"... How will users interact with the system? What will their perception be of saving and working in a fundamentally different way? Working from and saving to the cloud IS different and can be intimidating, but in so many ways makes more sense. The author also discusses topics such as SCSBs and software-as-a-service in a way that is informational and in-depth, yet very understandable and approachable.

Grounding The Cloud Basics and Brokerages MS Todd D Lyle Lindsay Preston 9780615972183 Books Reviews

There is no doubt that in the future, the Cloud will evolve into a rich ecosystem of service providers and more importantly educated consumers, each building upon the offerings of others. As Mr. Lyle articulates cloud service brokers play an important role, mediating between providers and consumers. However, the most important piece in this book is the part dedicated to the "human element". Simply put, Todd's goal is to "make the cloud understandable so we can all take advantage of its benefits." His vision of a "Specialist Cloud Service Brokerage" will play an increased role because by design they will address more of the human element side to both technology and change. A SCSB should be an expert in analyzing your business and working with you to identify cloud solutions that will best meet you and your employees' needs. Thus, as Todd describes them, a SCSB can help put together your cloud strategy with consideration to continuity planning and risk management. A very unique, practical and innovated approach rather than a "rebranded" managed services focused on providing cloud commodities like continuous quality assurance and optimization, setting common standards for service specification, providing mechanisms for lifecycle governance and service certification, to automatic arbitrage respecting consumer preferences, continuous optimization of service delivery, failure prevention and recovery at runtime. Todd has convinced me that the business owner can "manage" those services but the SCSB adds real value by addressing your business' human element.
If you are expecting a book written in techno-lingo, then don't buy this book; however, if you want a book, written in plain English, that explains key concepts and usage scenarios then BUY this terrific book to get started.

For most business folks, technology and especially the cloud are the "Latin" of today. They do not want to know how things work, they just want it to work. Many have heard of this "cloud thing" but have no clue as to what it really means Is it suitable for them? How they can leverage it to make their computing lives more efficient? What terms do they need to know to ask the right questions to get started? Are their companies or people that can help them get started? In Grounding the Cloud, Todd clearly brings years of experience in the technology industry to explain, in clear and concise terms, the basics for what folks need to know and help answer these questions.

While explaining terms and the technology, Todd manages to weave in real world usage stories that provide a picture of how people are using cloud tools in their businesses. While this book is probably too simple for those that have a higher level of technical knowledge and experience, even they should find some nuggets of wisdom in this books pages. Todd clearly has a deep understanding of this market space and shares that knowledge with the reader in a format and style that makes for an interesting read.
Easy to read and very understandable. Well written!
Very easy to understand, " The Cloud" concept, after reading the book. I found it well written and easy to read.
This is a well written book with a great deal of helpful information about the Cloud. Though I already had some basic understanding of the Cloud and its' uses, the book provided some very interesting and useful insight. I indeed, did learn a number of things.

The case studies brought the Cloud to life and clearly demonstrated the benefits of a thoughtfully planned Cloud strategy. As a matter of fact, through the book, Mr. Lyle gave me some ideas of how I can use the Cloud in a new venture I am undertaking!
As one of the readers who are 'resistant to change', I found the information presented in "Grounding The Cloud" extremely informative. The breadth of options available to the business owner is much more extensive than I imagined and the solutions appear to be endlessly moldable to individual needs. Also, the unique accounts of the different entities grasping the concept of Cloud utilization and the resulting savings to the bottom dollar were telling. My thanks to the author for putting this information into something even I could absorb.
